THE ROLL OF HONOUR

Users can search the database according to name, time period and continent where the death occurred. The database has a portrait photograph or other personal details of as good as all marines who perished, thereby literally putting a face to the name of the marine in question. At the museum, the Roll of Honour has been set up as part of the Naval Infantry exhibition which presents an overview of the history of the Marine Corps.

WHY A ROLL OF HONOUR?

The Marine Corps was founded by Johan de Witt and Michiel de Ruyter on 10 December 1665. Across the centuries, many marines gave their lives in the service of the Dutch armed forces. Including the early days of May of 1940, a watershed moment in the history of the City of Rotterdam. On the north bank around the bridges across the river Maas, the marines defended the city against the German onslaught. In this battle and the decades that followed since, marines have laid down their lives to maintain peace and security in every corner of the globe.

Sadly the details of marines who died in the distant past are often either incomplete or unknown. From 1940 to the present day however, everything is well documented and has been fully made accessible for this Roll of Honour. With this new digital document, the Marines Museum pays tribute to the marines who perished and the highest sacrifice they brought.

Next of kin or people who are otherwise concerned may actively provide information to round out the database thereby honouring and saluting the marines. If you are in possession of such information, please get in touch with the Collection Department by sending an e-mail.

We are also keen to include details of marines who perished or were killed in action before 1940 in this Roll of Honour. Any information regarding these marines is highly appreciated.
